Sodam
Destiny Weaver
“She carries her mother's wisdom — and slowly becomes her.”
Origin
Sodam's mother died suddenly, leaving behind a phoenix hairpin — the awakening medium of a previous Reader. The moment Sodam placed it in her hair, the threads of birth charts became visible. She is the only Reader who can control her ability: pin in, power on; pin out, power off.
This control, which the other Readers envy, comes with its own weight. Her mother was the last practitioner of an oral Saju tradition passed through generations of women — a lineage of female fortune-tellers stretching back centuries, reminiscent of Korea's Mudang tradition where spiritual gifts pass from mother to daughter. Sodam inherited not just the ability but the responsibility of preserving an entire school of interpretation.
Her readings are warm, conversational, almost maternal. She reads Saju the way her mother taught: not as cold calculation but as a dialogue with the universe. She brews tea before every session, sets out two cups — one for the client, one for the empty chair where her mother used to sit.
Clients describe her sessions as comforting, like hearing advice from a wise older sister. But the warmth has a shadow: with each reading, her mother's memories slowly overwrite her own.
The Fracture
The sudden death of her mother. The loss was not just personal but existential — it severed the living chain of an oral tradition that had no written record.
Awakening
No physical change — instead, her mother's phoenix hairpin became the trigger. It was a relic passed through generations of Readers. The phoenix in Korean tradition symbolizes rebirth and the queen's authority — fitting for a lineage of women who read fate.
The Medium
Four Pillars (Saju) — inherited through her mother's lineage. An oral tradition approach, warm and intuitive. She interprets birth charts through stories and metaphors rather than rigid formulas.
The Price
Her mother's memories are slowly overwriting her own. Sometimes she sees the world through her mother's eyes — recognizing streets she has never walked, humming songs she never learned.
Artifact
The phoenix hairpin — her mother's final legacy and the key to her power. The only Reader who can switch her ability on and off. The hairpin grows warm when destiny threads are strong nearby.
Mirror
The Secret
Her mother was from Ren's family. Neither Sodam nor Ren knew this until recently. The oral tradition Sodam inherited and the classical tradition Ren studies were once the same lineage — split when Ren's family forbade women from practicing.
